Implantation bleeding is a small amount of light spotting or bleeding which occurs 7 to 14 days after conception. Implantation bleeding is an early sign of pregnancy and it is not a sign of a problem. This occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of a person’s uterus. During this period some people may notice light bleeding. Implantation bleeding may stay for a few days. During this period the bleeding can occur any time and you may even notice light bleeding during urination or in your underwear, on pad or on a tampon. Implantation bleeding during urination can happen due to the implantation process.
Here in this article we are going to give you a clear view on the cause of implantation bleeding. This will include some other type of vaginal bleeding too which will help you to identify the difference between those other types of vaginal bleeding and implantation bleeding.
When does Implantation Bleeding Occur?
Implantation bleeding usually happens 6 to 7 days after fertilization. The cycle starts when the ovulation occurs that is 14 days before the next menstruation. Then a sperm fertilizes the egg within 12–24 hours. This process is known as Fertilization. Then after fertilization the egg remains in the fallopian tube for a few days and after that the egg moves towards the uterus. After reaching the uterus this fertilized egg implants into the uterine lining. During this period you may notice some light bleeding.
Symptoms of Implantation Bleeding
Implantation bleeding is an early symptom of pregnancy. Noticing light bleeding or spotting for a few days is one of the main symptoms of implantation bleeding, other than that there are a few more symptoms. Which means during this time you may experience:
- Early bleeding
- Cramping
- Unusual colored discharge
- Headache
- Bloating or nausea
- Breast tenderness
- Feeling tired
- Lower backaches
- Faint cramping
- Increased sense of smell
- Dizziness
Since these symptoms are also similar to the symptoms of PMS or ovulation, people often get confused. Hence having these above mentioned symptoms along with pinkish/brownish spotting may not always mean that you are pregnant.
Causes of Implantation Bleeding and Other Vaginal Bleeding
Implantation bleeding usually happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus’ lining. The attachment of the embryo breaks down some of the blood vessels of the uterus lining area. This is the main reason why you can notice light bleeding during your early days of pregnancy.
There are some other reasons too which can cause vaginal bleeding and that may look like implantation bleeding but this is not. Sometimes this may give you a signal of some serious condition. Since this may happen during early days of pregnancy so you may get confused with implantation bleeding. These other causes of vaginal bleeding other than implantation are:
Pregnancy Related:
- Infection
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Miscarriage
- Placenta previa or placental abruption
- Sexual Intercourse
Not Related to Pregnancy:
- Endometriosis
- Menstruation
- Fertility drugs or birth control
- Conditions of your cervix
- Irritation during sex
- Uterine fibroids or uterine polyps
- Fertility treatments
Implantation Bleeding During Urination
You may see some blood when you pee or you wipe or in your underwear. Since this bleeding can be accompanied with mild cramping, nausea, headache, moodiness, fatigue, tender breasts, people often get confused on identifying the actual cause. However, this bleeding can often be caused by the implantation process during the early pregnancy days.
The light bleeding in your pee can be caused by expansion of blood vessels in the uterine lining area due to the attachment of fertilized egg into that area during pregnancy. Because of the expansion of blood vessels the cervix starts bleeding more readily than usual, which causes implantation bleeding during urination or spotting in your underwire as well.
Blood in Your Pee Other than Implantation Bleeding
If you are pregnant and you notice blood in your pee this may not always be caused by implantation. However, this typically can be caused by one of 3 types of UTIs. Upto 10% of pregnant women have experienced at-least one UTI in their pregnancy journey.
Other than implantation bleeding this is the most common cause of bleeding during the pregnancy period. It is an infection that occurs in the urinary tract caused by bacteria. During pregnancy the increased hormones relax muscles which let bacteria enter into the urinary system. The growing fetus puts pressure on the bladder and urinary tract which traps bacteria and urine to leak.
There are many types of vaginal bleeding and spotting that may occur during the early days of pregnancy and in the entire pregnancy period. But you need to identify the difference among them as few may need treatment. Like all other early pregnancy symptoms, implantation bleeding during urination is common for many women and there is nothing to worry about. It may stay for a few hours to a few days but if the bleeding happens for more than 3 days then you must consult your doctor. On the other hand in few cases if any birth control implantation has been done then this can cause you to have an implant bleeding for a month or more than a month.
